Broken down on the M1?
The M1 is the spine of the East Midlands, running from Leicester (J21) past Loughborough, East Midlands Airport, Long Eaton and Nottingham up to the A38 for Mansfield and Alfreton at J28.
Parts of the M1 through the East Midlands are smart motorways, where the hard shoulder may be a live running lane. If you can, leave at the next junction or reach an emergency area (orange surface, blue SOS sign). If you stop in a live lane, keep your seatbelt on, hazards on, and call 999 straight away. Once you are safe behind the barrier, call us with the junction numbers you're between, the direction (northbound/southbound) and the nearest marker post number.
