Guide
What to do if your car breaks down
Make yourself visible
Hazard lights on. If it's dark, keep sidelights on. On normal roads (not motorways) you can place a warning triangle at least 45 metres behind the vehicle if it's safe to do so.
Get to safety
Move people away from traffic - on to a pavement or verge, behind a barrier if there is one.
Work out where you are
Note the road name or number, direction, nearest junction, landmark, postcode or use your phone's map to share your location. what3words and a dropped pin on WhatsApp both work.
Call for help
Call us for emergencies. If you're in danger or blocking a live lane, call 999 first.
Get out on the left, stand behind the barrier and away from traffic. If you're stopped in a live lane, stay belted in with hazards on and call 999 first. Then call us. Full motorway safety guide
